Graceful bronze elephant from Ghana made with the lost wax technique, a method widely used since ancient times in many parts of the African continent.
Often these small reproductions of animals served as fetishes and the choice of the subject could be attributed to the bond that existed between the animal depicted and the tribe that revered it.
This phenomenon is related to animist religions, for which the spirits can take many forms to manifest themselves.
