Mask depicting Mahakala, the Great Black, the deity that guards the dharma and that corresponds to Shiva for the Hindus. In Tibetan it is called Nagpo Chenpo or Gonpo, ‘Lord Protector’.
Usually painted in black, this deity can also be represented in colourful, according the local tradition. Its constant elements are, however, the five skulls adorning its crown, a metaphor of human pains that are transfigured in the five Dhyani Buddhas.
Carved in wood, the facial details are are very well defined; on the back, part of the Customs wax seal attesting the authentic Tibetan origin.
