In ancient times weights made of Bronze were used to balance Gold powder, the traditional money of Akan people. Originally they had geometrical shapes that with time developed into human, animal or insect shapes. Sometimes these weights were used also as pendants or other kind of jewels to substitute Gold when it was impossible to buy. These animals were chosen for their symbolism: the fish was the symbol of help, protection and nourishment.

Today, it is also a collector’s item.
